Arakaki Shunichi Sensei − Biographical Note

Written by Jimmy Mora

Arakaki Shunichi is one of the senior students training under Onaga Yoshimitsu Kaichō at the Shinjinbukan Honbu Dōjō in Okinawa, Japan. He is the official Shinjinbukan Honbu Dōjō Secretary and Assistant to Onaga Kaichō, responsible for communication with all Shinjinbukan members.

Even before Arakaki Sensei joined Shinjinbukan, he was a highly respected instructor in other martial arts. His long journey began at age thirteen, with Kendō. During high school and college, he won numerous competitions. Currently, he holds a Roku Dan (6th Dan) in Iaidō, Go Dan (5th Dan) in Kendō, and a San Dan (3rd Dan) in Jodō.

Onaga Kaichō and Arakaki Sensei had already been acquainted for a while when the first encounter at the Shinjinbukan Honbu Dōjō took place. Just before the turn of the century, Onaga Sensei wished for Onaga Michiko Sensei to learn about the ancient art of Jodō and asked Arakaki Sensei for an introduction. Arakaki Sensei was amazed to see the depth of Onaga Kaichō's art and decided to learn Karate and Ti at the Onaga Karate Dōjō.

In September 2013, Onaga Yoshimitsu Kaichō awarded the certificate of Renshi, Go Dan (Senior instructor, 5th Dan) to Arakaki Shunichi Sensei. In the Shinjinbukan School, the title of Renshi has only been awarded to three direct deshi of Onaga Yoshimitsu Kaichō. For reference, see Credentials (Certificates).
