Summer Gasshuku, Shinjinbukan Honbu Dōjō, Okinawa — June 2007

On June 2007, the Minister of Foreign Affaires of the Republic of Latvia, Dr. Artis Pabriks made an official state visit to Japan, which included four days in Okinawa. On this occasion, Onaga Sensei was presented with the title of the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Latvia in Okinawa. This was the first Consulate of the European Union ever opened in Okinawa. Minister Pabriks has been my time Deshi and a member of Shinjinbukan for ten years.; So, in fact Onaga Sensei received this honorary title from his mago deshi (a deshi of a deshi), which implies a meaning similar to a grandchild.     Read more

Summer Session, Shinjinbukan New York Shibu Dōjō — July 2007

One of the most important and misunderstood training methods in Okinawan Karate is the machiwara. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to have a machiwara bolted to the floor in a New York apartment; or in an expensive commercial building, like the one we use for our Dōjō. So, I designed a new portable machiwara platform. After several design attempts, and lots of money ($$!!), I am getting closer to a working model. My machiwara uses 400 pounds as counter weight to stabilize the base of the machiwara.     Read more

Bōnenkai, Shinjinbukan New York Shibu Dōjō — December 2007

On December 28, 2007, the Shinjinbukan New York Dōjō celebrated our Christmas/Holidays/New Year's Party, also known in Japanese as a Bōnenkai (忘年会). Our training session/party included a few students, children and their parents. This was a celebration to honor my students in New York and in Europe. In 2007, my teacher, Onaga Yoshimitsu Kaichō, finalized the creation of the Shinjinbukan International Association and conducted several seminars around the world. As we start a new year, we look forward to many more trips and seminars.     Read more
