Autumn Gasshuku, Casale Monferrato, Italy — October 2010

Written by Melanie S. Petrak

From October 8th to 10th, 2010, Sensei Jimmy Mora (New York City, USA) taught a Gasshuku in Casale Monferrato, located near Milan, Italy.  This event was hosted by our Shinjinbukai Affiliate in Italy, Sensei Luca Simonetti, exclusively for the European Shinjinbukan members.  Below are some of the highlights of this weekend training camp:

Chīshi Training

October 9th — An important training tool used in Okinawan Karate is the Chīshi, which is a small one-sided weight used to train the stabilizing muscles, breathing control, body alignment and balance.  Mora Sensei demonstrated the use of Chīshi as the rest of us followed along.

Naifuanchi Sho Dan

Our training continued with Naifuanchi Sho Dan by looking at the Junjo (the sequence of the kata).  In the pictures below, Sensei Mora checked the correct posture of each position, as he explained this form to Luca Simonetti.

Kami wo Tsuki Yaburu — Paper Cutting Tsuki

In the Shinjinbukan School, one of the typical training methods is to practice speed tsuki to cut paper.  There is no specific name for this, but one possible name could be Kami wo Tsuki Yaburu.  In the photos below, we have several examples of Melanie Petrak "breaking paper".
