Tachi Machiwara — Basic Concepts

November 16, 2010 — Tonight's session was focused on training Tachi Machiwara.  First, Onaga Kaichō explained some of the principles of striking the Tachi Machiwara.  In the Shinjinbukan School, we pay special attention to the quality of the sound that we get from hitting the Machiwara.

Tsuki (Hand Strike) — Physical Structure

In order to understand how to use Tachi Machiwara, it is essential to first understand the physical structure of Tsuki.  Next, Onaga Kaichō demonstrated the Kitae Gata (Conditioning Method) or conditioning strikes used in our training.

The same principles of Kitae Gata (Conditioning Method) or conditioning strikes are used at the arrival point of each motion.  In other words, for every other static position of every Kata (Form): Tsuki (Hand Strike), Uke (Blocking Motion), etc.

In the pictures below, we can see how after each Tsuki (Hand Strike) that I made to the Tachi Machiwara, my teacher immediately applied a strike to the Kata (shoulder) or to the Waki (the muscle area that connects the deltoid and the chest).  These conditioning strikes are not meant to be applied with brute force, but with a very focused intensity and precision in order to penetrate deep into the muscle tissue.

Afterwards, we all thanked Onaga Kaichō for sharing his knowledge.  And the training continued for several hours into the night...
