Onaga Yoshimitsu Kaichō's International Tour, Dry Ridge, Kentucky — November 17 to 21, 2010
Written by Jimmy Mora
On November 17, 2015, Onaga Yoshimitsu Kaichō arrived to the Gasshuku hosted by Devorah Yoshiko Dometrich Sensei at her home Dōjō Dry Ridge, Kentucky. Also in attendance were Arakaki Shunichi Sensei, Jimmy Mora, Jonathon Hallberg, Melanie Petrak, Paul Babladelis Sensei, Perry Campbell Sensei and other Karate instructors who were personally invited to this event.
Arrival to Kentucky
Our host, Dometrich Sensei showed us her wonderful hospitality as we trained in her home Dōjō. This short time was devoted to Karate. Every day we learned directly from Onaga Kaichō.
Outdoor Photo Shooting
At the beginning of the Gasshuku, a lot of the training was conducted outdoors. In the pictures below, we can see the beautiful Kentucky scenery.
The photographer in charge of the shooting was Mr. Doug Daulton, a senior deshi of Dometrich Sensei. The photos were taken for use in a book Onaga Kaichō is currently working on. So far, Onaga Kaichō has published three books . One of his future books focuses on the application of Ti to the use of weapons.
According to Onaga no Ti, our training does not include any traditional weapons Kata (Forms), because a weapon should merely be used as an extension of the body. Therefore, a Tichikayā (a practitioner of Ti), will apply body mechanics the same way with or without weapons, an example being the bō (staff).
Devorah Yoshiko Dometrich no Ti
Devorah Yoshiko Dometrich no Ti is a Kata created by Onaga Yoshimitsu Kaichō to teach his concepts of Ti applied to use any weapon. This Kata was dedicated to Devorah Yoshiko Dometrich Sensei and will feature in Onaga Kaichō's book # 4. Below, see but a few of the photos that will appear in the book.
Jam Session at Elk Creek Vineyards — Video Clip
One evening after training we enjoyed some of the local wines at the Elk Creek Vineyards, as we listened to a live band playing blues music. As the party continued, Onaga Kaichō was invited to perform on stage. In the video below, you can enjoy a blues jam session performed by Onaga Kaichō and Paul Babladelis.

The Shinjinbukan Kentucky gasshuku ended and we took a few farewell pictures and exchanged gifts. Onaga Kaichō's international tour continued in Florida with Shinzato Yoshihiko Sensei; and later to Lima, Peru, Argentina (Buenos Aires, Chivilcoy and Rosario) and finally back to New York.
