HEIWA NO ISHIJI — THE CORNERSTONE OF PEACE

On June 7th, 2007, the Latvian Delegation visited the Heiwa no Ishiji, the Cornersone of Peace, to lay down flowers at the Peace Memorial.

The Heiwa no Ishiji was erected to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II and The Battle of Okinawa (the last Battle of World War II).  The names of all those who perished during the Battle of Okinawa are inscribed in the granite stones, from all nationalities, both military and civilian.  As of June 23. 2005, the total number of names is: 240,383.

KUDAKA JIMA

Next, we left on a trip to the island of KUDAKA JIMA.  This is one of the sacred sites of the Okinawan ancestor worship religion.  We received a tour guide by Inese Avana, a Doctoral student in Okinawan cultutre and folklore at Ryukyu University.  During our trip we also took went on a bycycle tour through the islansd's rain forest.

And we ended the day with a great selection of sushi.  All throughout our trip we had a great selection of traditional Okinawan and Japanese food.
