Melanie Petrak − Biographical Note

Melanie has trained martial arts since her early teens. Originally born in Germany into a half German, half Polish family, she moved to the UK after university.  There she switched from Taekwondo to Okinawan karate and since developed a strong interest in learning about true Okinawan martial arts and Japanese culture.

In April 2008, Melanie fulfilled her dream to travel to Okinawa and learn Karate.  Searching for the right Dōjō, Melanie met Onaga Yoshimitsu Kaichō and began training at the Shinjinbukan School.  In December 2008, Ms. Petrak received the rank of I Kkyū / 1st Kyū.  During her time in Okinawa, Melanie began to learn some refined techniques such as cutting paper using Tsuki (hand strike).

In August 2009, Ms. Petrak received her Sho Dan / 1st Dan (first degree black belt) and a few months later she returned to her native Germany, to the city of Augsburg, where she began teaching Karate at a local Verein (public Sports organization).  In addition to her training at the Shinjinbukan Honbu Dōjō, Ms. Petrak Melanie had the opportunity to train with other Shinjinbukan members and teach in the United States and Europe:

In 2010, Ms. Petrak received an official authorization from Onaga Kaichō as the head instructor of the Shinjinbukan Augsburg Branch.

In February 2012, Ms. Petrak received her promotion to Ni Dan / 2nd Dan from Onaga Yoshimitsu Kaichō.  Ms. Petrak is also an accomplished linguist and translator for several languages (English, German, Polish, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese).  Among her certifications, she also obtained a San Kyū in the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test).  For reference, see Credentials (Certificates)
